Sime Darby Property’s 21k Strong Virtual Run & Ride Successfully Raised Over Rm50k

ARA DAMANSARA, 30 MARCH 2021 – As part of its sustainability commitment and objective to contribute to a better society, Sime Darby Property (the Group) will channel the funds raised from its 21K Strong Virtual Run to benefit the underprivileged communities within Taman Bukit Subang, Shah Alam.

Sime Darby Property’s 21K Strong Virtual Run and Ride Movement which ran from 21 January to 21 March, ended on a high note with over 10,000 participants running and cycling over 1 million kilometres, and raising RM53,185 in funds.

In accordance with the PENJANA GLC Community initiative unveiled by Prime Minister YAB Tan Sri Dato’ Muhyiddin Yassin in June last year in which Government Link Companies are encouraged to adopt a community and help them thrive, the Group has rolled out the Sime Darby Property Economic Enhancement Programme. This initiative aims to uplift local communities through capacity building, equipping participants with basic financial knowledge for better decision-making in their daily lives. The Programme utilises vacant or under-utilised commercial complex within Sime Darby Property’s townships as community centres to generate a sustainable source of income for underprivileged communities. A community of B40 households in Taman Bukit Subang within the City of Elmina has been selected as the first beneficiary of this programme.

Additionally, the Programme fulfils the Sime Darby Property Sustainability Goals 2030 in Job Creation (Goal 5); and United Nation’s Sustainability Goals in No Poverty (Goal 1); Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8) and Sustainable Cities and Communities (Goal 11).

The City of Elmina is known for spearheading wellness initiatives and lifestyle events. Through its first 21K Strong Virtual Run and Ride event, the township has encouraged Malaysians to maintain healthy lifestyles despite the ongoing Movement Control Order (MCO) by participating in a meaningful movement to raise funds for a community impacted by COVID-19.

The initial distance goal was set at 21,000km and it was achieved just three days into the challenge. Looking at the overwhelming participation figures that the Movement garnered within the first week, Sime Darby Property adjusted the goal to 1,000,000 km.

Dato’ Azmir believes that as a proponent of healthier living and wellness, the Group is doing right by organising an uplifting event in challenging times like these.

“The 21K Strong Virtual Run & Ride was a great opportunity for the community to remain active, exercise safely and connect with one another. People’s well-being is always at the forefront of every sustainable community and even more so during a pandemic. We will continue to support outreach programmes to enrich the lives of those living within and around our townships,” he said.
