Community-Driven Recycling

Overview

When we build townships, we aim to set them up to be sustainable and resilient. As a large scale developer whose township developments can be considered economies with large communities, we have a moral obligation to enable the community to live sustainable lifestyles. These among other reasons drove our decision to focus on establishing practical and effective community-based recycling. In 2016/2017, we started a dedicated pilot program at Bandar Bukit Raja, where to date over 30 Tonnes of household recyclables have been recycled. At the same time, other communities have established resident-driven recycling at Denai Alam, Bukit Jelutong, Melawati and elsewhere. Moving ahead, we are rolling out a dedicated program for the B40 communities in low-medium cost residential housing, called the Maintenance Offset Community Recycling Program. This program is being piloted first at two statutory Strata Housing developments in Bandar Bukit Raja. By implementing this program, we are addressing both socio-economic and environmental issues.

Objective

To reduce overall waste generation in residential communities, offering more sustainable living alternatives and to encourage community building around the activity of recycling.
