Sime Darby Property joins DBKL s Greener KL Initiative and enters the Malaysia Book of Records

Kuala Lumpur, December 2014 – In a bid to increase the number of edible fruit trees in the urban city, Sime Darby Property recently joined forces with Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) Greener KL Initiative under the NKEA to plant record number of fruit trees within city limits.

While everyone else was busy making plans for the weekend, Sime Darby Property volunteers made their way to Kolam Takungan Banjir Batu in Sentul to begin their good works. A total of 28 plots were allocated for the plantation of fruit trees and 2 of those plots were allocated for Sime Darby Property volunteers to do their bit for Mother Nature.

The initiative was a big hit in the private sector, especially among property developers as a means of giving back to nature. There were a total of 29 companies which participated in the Greener KL Initiative and over 1,100 volunteers got their hands dirty throughout the initiative officiated by the Mayor of Kuala Lumpur, YBhg. Dato Seri Haji Ahmad Phesal Bin Haji Talib.

On behalf of Sime Darby Property, Mohd Pouzi Che Nik, Head SQM, said “Despite the growth of development, there is a definitive need to care for the environment and improve people’s quality of life without compromising the essence of Malaysia, especially its local fruits”.

By planting 3,500 fruit trees, DBKL’s Greener KL Initiative earned a place in the Malaysia Book of Records as the ‘Most Number of Fruit Trees Planted in a Single Event’. The 75 volunteers from Sime Darby Volunteers Programme (SDVP) managed to plant 200 Jackfruit trees out of the total number of trees planted during the event.

Apart from the Greener KL Initiative, the SDVP supports employee engagement programmes that aim to increase employees’ morale and camaraderie, foster teamwork and create a sense of belonging to the Sime Darby Group. It is a platform that shares the same passion as the Group and strives collectively to make positive changes.
